*** THE LINNAEAN SOCIETY OF NEW YORK - MEETING PROGRAM - AMERICAN MUSEUM OF
NATURAL HISTORY, NEW YORK CITY ***

This coming TUESDAY (13 Dec 2011) *The Linnaean Society of New York* (TLS)
will present another two part program featuring talks by ornithologists
Mary LeCroy and Scott Edwards. North America's spectacular avifauna
provides the underlying theme of the night beginning with an up-close and
personal look at some of the most dream worthy of our birds (no drooling
please) and this will be followed by some insightful reflections on the
origins and diversity of songbirds, including the North American species
that we enjoy so much as birders. As usual, the program will be held in the
Linder Theater at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York
City.
*
6:00 p.m WATERBIRDS TO WOODPECKERS - MARY LECROY*

In the first part of a two-part program, AMNH ornithologist Mary LeCroy,
using the Museum’s unrivaled collection of bird skins, will present
specimens of North American birds that every birder would love to see,
including Ivory Gull, Eskimo Curlew, Black Rail, and Ivory-billed
Woodpecker.

*7:30 p.m. PATTERNS OF SPECIATION IN AUSTRALIAN AND NORTH AMERICAN
BIRDS**- SCOTT V. EDWARDS
*

Scott Edwards is Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Curator
of Ornithology and Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology in the Museum of
Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. His work with avian DNA
sequences has led him to suspect that all the world’s songbirds—more than
half of all bird species—are descended from Australian ancestors. He writes
about his talk, “I will review the major patterns in the biodiversity of
Australian and North American birds and show the ways in which the two
avifaunas are similar and different and how modern genetics is providing a
picture of the timing and mechanisms behind this striking biodiversity.”

*WHERE AND WHEN*
Both programs are open to the public FREE OF CHARGE and will be held in the
Linder Theater on the first floor of the American Museum of Natural
History. Enter the museum from the 77th Street entrance, where TLS members
will be on hand to guide you up to the auditorium. The first program will
last approximately one hour. Anyone wishing to meet Tom Stephenson before
the 7:30 program may join the TLS party for dinner at Pappardella, 316
Columbus Ave. at 75th St., at 6 pm. The reservation will be in the name of
Deutsch.
