After my 2 recent successes at chasing the MOBL and the GRWA , I felt this
strong urge to try for a NYS "hat trick". Tom Johnson's forward of Marlene
DuBois' 1/2/12 eBird report of an Atlantic Puffin at Montauk S.Pk., got me
dreaming, and so, despite a late start and windy conditions in Riverhead, I
headed south and east for the "Land of Oz"!
Finding even stronger winds at the point, before venturing out to the
restaurant overlook, I made use of the relatively new changing station and
"winterized"! A quick scan brought the realization that although all 3
scooters, both loons, c. eiders, gannets and a razorbill were present, they
were all in short numbers. On a subsequent scan, I found a dovekie, possibly
the same bird reported by Angus Wilson on 1/1/12, in the same area he reported
it from (in front of the small bluff, between the restaurant overlook and the
lighthouse). The only difference being while his was on the beach, today's bird
was feeding, a short ways out in the water.
While still on puffin patrol, I walked the rocks around the lighthouse, checked
the "lee" beach, and then proceeded to Camp Hero, where I had similar results,
albeit, without a dovekie.
Yes, the NYS "hat trick" was denied, but Mountain Bluebird, Grace's Warbler and
Dovekie, all within 5 days, is not "chopped liver"!
Cheers,Bob
