While riding an LIRR train (Babylon line) into the city for work this morning
(around 8:45) I spotted an OSPREY flying north of the tracks, between
Wantagh Parkway and Bellmore station. At first glance I almost wrote it off as
another gull (plenty of Ring-billed and Herring seen during the trip), until I
saw the fish it was carrying, probably plucked from nearby Wantagh or Seaman
ponds. This siting is over a week ahead of when I typically see this species
for the first time most years. Chalk another one up to the mild winter.John
