Wednesday, 25 April, 2012 - Bryant Park (mid-town) Manhattan, N.Y. City

The (appears a male, maybe 1st-spring male) PROTHONOTARY Warbler is
again present in Bryant Park, mid-town Manhattan. After nearly an hour
searching all of the park (including the Fifth Ave. side of the NY
Public Library), I found it working London Plane tree branches just a
few yards up and away from the west side of the large decorative
fountain that is at the west end of the very large open lawn. While
watching, from 2:50 - 3 p.m., the warbler came down for a minute or so
into one of the flower planters that are on the immediate edges of
that large fountain, & I was able to get a photo of the bird in fairly
close. This, for those unfamiliar with Bryant Park is not too far
inside from the Sixth Ave. side, and nearly exactly half-way between
40 and 42 Streets. I lost sight of the warbler once it jumped up back
into the London Plane trees again, but assume it started foraging in
the nearer trees. This bird is nowhere as "easy" to find as the one of
that species that provided the first record at Bryant Park, an autumn
occurrence. This present bird is working much of the park, at least
that area west of the west side of the NY Public Library main branch.
It could take some time to spot, although it is still, as far as I
could see, the only bright yellow bird flitting about that place for
now.

Also seen today in the first 45+ minutes of looking around Bryant Park
were: Ovenbird (in SW corner low plantings), 4+ Hermit Thrush (at
least 3 on Fifth Ave. side), 2 Gray Catbirds, 2 Eastern Towhees, &
many White-throated Sparrows plus a few Song Sparrows, and 1 Swamp
Sparrow (in less-than-stellar plumage), these in addition to usual NYC
feral/street birds. I saw 2 birders, one specifically seeking the
warbler and I certainly hope that a late-day look is productive for a
life bird in a most unexpected setting!

P.S., my point-&-shoot photo will get downloaded in the eve.

Good luck,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan
