Wow. What a fantastic morning in Prospect Park. Three of us from CUNY started at Grand Army Plaza at 8:00 and were rewarded with two special birds right away. There was a Cape May warbler in the conifers behind the Stranahan statue and a Philadelphia vireo not far away in the underbrush. Lots of warblers the whole way, culminating in a spectacular sight near the pools. There was a swarm of flies low to the ground and birds were coming down into the understory to catch them. There were nearly a dozen species of warbler, vireo, and others zipping right past our faces. A scarlet tanager was at eye level. I have never seen anything like that before. It was a truly amazing day for migrants. Five species of vireos and a personal record (by a wide margin) 17 warblers. International Migratory Bird Day finally lived up to its name.
