Had my first gannet of the season today about 15 miles east of Fire Island Inlet, perhaps 4 1/2 miles offshore. Really nice adult bird with bright white plumage and contrasting black wing tips, that was a marked contrast to the gulls in the area. Not a lot of bait on the surface, so I'm not sure why it was here perhaps a month ahead of the herring and most of its kind.
