All, I saw the Painted Bunting around 3:10pm. I arrived around 2:30 and was told by some birders that they had just seen it five minutes earlier on a little path (directions below). We walked over, but of course it was not there. After meeting Eric Miller (thanks!) I refound the bird at the yew bush. First, driving directions: From either the Throgs Neck or Whitestone, take the Cross Island Pkwy south. Take the exit to go east on the Long Island Expressway, I495. As the ramp curves around, stay to the right and take the ramp for the Douglaston Pkwy. This is well signed. Turn right and go south on the Douglaston, which is really just a four lane road. Important: in about 1/2 mile, the Douglaston makes a LEFT TURN. Be in the left lane and be prepared to turn left. This can easily be missed. In about another mile, you encounter a complicated jumble of overpasses, as the Cross island intersects the Grand Central. This is apparent from Google maps. There is a well marked Sanitation Department Building on your left. Go very slowly and look to the right: THAT'S IT! That little road right under the overpass. Turn right and drive to the parking lot, well shown on Google maps. As Steve Walter pointed out (thanks!), the yew bush (evergreen) is at 40.743120, -73.739594. This seems to be the most reliable place for the bird recently. It was there this morning, and this afternoon at 3:10 and later around 3:45. Earlier it was seen along the loop path that can be found as follows: from the yew, walk to the right to about 40.743208, -73.739108. Head north on the path. It will bring you out about 40.742944, -73.740427. Half way along is a little dirt path to the north also worth exploring. There is also a female Common Yellowthroat in the area.
