Has anyone noticed anomalies in the new AOU checklist online at http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/? I would appreciate any light anyone can shed on what is going on. Changes seem to have been made to the online checklist for which I have seen no corresponding direction in the published supplements through the 53rd. In addition, there are some very strange things in the downloadable spreadsheet version of the AOU checklist. Please see below if this interests you. Thanks. Carena Pooth First, I downloaded the Excel file offered in the left sidebar on http://checklist.aou.org/ (also at the top of the above-mentioned online checklist page) and found some weirdness in that spreadsheet (e.g. Odontophoridae – Northern Bobwhite – is listed after Phasianidae; a whole bunch of non-passerines – SOME grebes, SOME gulls, and more – are scattered amongst the members of Passeriformes). After that, I stopped looking, so there may be a lot more. Then I went to the online list at http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/ and found that the grebes were at least listed together, but not in the order I expected: order: <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/3031> Podicipediformes * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/3031> family: Podicipedidae * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/2912> genus: Tachybaptus * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/2824> species: Tachybaptus dominicus (Least Grebe) * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/1984> genus: Podiceps * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/2825> species: Podiceps nigricollis (Eared Grebe) * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/1985> species: Podiceps auritus (Horned Grebe) * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/1986> species: Podiceps grisegena (Red-necked Grebe) * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/1987> genus: Podilymbus * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/2138> species: Podilymbus podiceps (Pied-billed Grebe) * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/138> species: Podilymbus gigas (Atitlan Grebe) † * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/139> genus: Aechmophorus * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/2139> species: Aechmophorus occidentalis (Western Grebe) * <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/140> species: Aechmophorus clarkii (Clark's Grebe) <http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/141> On the Clements list that can be downloaded from http://www.birds.cornell.edu/clementschecklist/downloadable-clements-checkli st the order is as I had expected it to be (pink highlighting is mine, indicating the ones on NYSOA’s NYS checklist): <http://www.birds.cornell.edu/clementschecklist/downloadable-clements-checkl ist>
