The basic-plumaged adult BLACK-HEADED GULL reported yesterday by Sara Burch
was still present today between 12:20pm and 1:00pm, in the same location.
I found the bird sitting on the water, ~100 feet downstream of the overlook
at the end of the trail that parallels the creek. The gull lifted off not
long thereafter, flew a bit farther downstream, then alighted on the water
again for a minute or two. It did that 2-3 times, gradually moving out of
sight near the mouth of the creek. Several minutes later it reappeared,
flying back upstream. Over the ensuing 30 minutes the bird repeated that
pattern a few times. It never did fly far enough upstream to reach my
vantage point, but nice scope views were obtained. The only other gulls
in the vicinity were a handful of Ring-billed Gulls.
