The Tufted Duck was in Knutson’s Marina (Huntington) at 7:45 this morning, quite close to shore, seen from the end of the driveway into the marina. (This is shortly north of the town parking lot from which it was originally reported.) Its location is also visible from the street above, but when I looked for it from there ca. 10 minutes later (after chatting with the quite friendly owner, who arrived as I was about to leave), I did not see it, nor the 6 Buffleheads that had also been there. This may conform to a pattern of departure in the fairly early morning.
At about 10:15, I saw the Barnacle Goose from Wellwood Avenue, grazing with Canada Geese on the grounds of St. Charles cemetery. In the interim, I went to Jones Beach Field 6 in hopes of sea-watching, but visibility was nil at that time.
