Date: Sunday, 30 December 2012 (2:48p-4:58p) Location: New York County - Randall's Island Reported by: Ben Cacace
The juvenile ICELAND GULL continues on the rocks just south of the N.Y. Post location viewable from the NE section of the island. The juvenile LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was resting on the water with a Herring Gull and a juvenile Great Black-backed Gull making for easy comparison. After scoping the NE section I headed west where the low tide 'island' on the western section of the Bronx Kill had the normal group of hundreds of Canada Geese, including 10 GADWALL with 4 females plus 2 KILLDEER resting on the mudflats. Going further west I accidentally flushed 3 sparrow-like birds with lots of white in the arm portion of the wings but the view was too brief to confirm them as Snow Buntings. They landed south of the information center. Shortly after this at 4:50pm a flock of 75+ HORNED LARK were seen feeding on field 2. They flushed on their own heading west then turned back to land further east past the information center.
