Hi all, Sorry for the late post, but this past weekend, Mary Beth Billerman, Ernie Lewis and I went birding around some spots in southern Nassau County. On Sunday, we found the continuing two male EURASIAN WIGEONS at the Massapequa Preserve (in the creek along the edge of the pond best accessed from the east side of the Preserve, near Harding Street). The birds have been at this pond the past few times I have seen them at the Preserve. We were unable to locate the hybrid wigeon that had been with them during previous visits. Also present at the Massapequa Preserve are continuing good numbers of Winter Wrens (at least 8 on a short walk through the woods), 3 Fox Sparrows, and other good winter birds.
At Jones Beach on Saturday, we encountered 3 COMMON REDPOLLS in the median at West End near the turnaround, where there has been a lot of activity lately. We also found a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the swale at the West End 2 Parking Lot loosely associating with Snow Buntings and Horned Larks. We were unable to locate Harlequin Ducks or Purple Sandpipers at Point Lookout, but there were very good numbers of both Red-breasted Mergansers and Long-tailed Ducks just off the beach, in much higher numbers than I've seen at this location over the past 2 weeks.
