Yesterday (Sun 13 Jan 2013), John Shemilt and I explored a couple of
offshore fishing spots. In contrast to the damp and foggy conditions ashore
(and first 20-30 miles on the water), we eventually broke out into warm
sunshine and unexpectedly smooth seas. Glorious! Over the course of the day
we tallied 42 ATLANTIC PUFFINS, 437 DOVEKIE, 5 NORTHERN FULMARS, and 9
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES. Interestingly, all the kittiwakes were adults,
mirroring the paucity of 1st-winter birds sighted from land this season.
Even allowing for the limited visibility, the inshore waters seemed very
dead to us and the only RAZORBILLS we countered were an adult at the mouth
of the Shinnecock Inlet and another adult in the bay itself. Two RED-NECKED
GREBES were also at the inlet.
