Taking advantage of today's "warm spell", at 2:00 PM, I headed down to Dune Rd. and Cupsogue Co. Pk., in the hope of crossing paths with a Red Crossbill. After checking the pines w/o the park's parking lot, I decided to continue on to Moriches Inlet, trying for some of the wintering species I've missed this season, e.g., Red-necked Grebe and some of the uncommon alcids. This fairly long walk (out & back) was short on birds, but at least provided the neat sight of ~ 60 seals, hauled out on the sand bar nearest the inlet. The drive east to Shinnicock Inlet was also very quiet, except for the Great Cormorant that was preening on the w/s light tower. Cheers,Bob --
