LAPLAND LONGSPURs today: 1 at Jones Beach (by the gazebo), 2 at St. Charles
Cemetery (seen from the westernmost road, toward the south end). In both
cases, with Horned Larks (about 100 at St. Charles) (no geese when I was
there). Some other non-everyday birds at Jones Beach over the weekend:
Northern Goshawk, Bufflehead and N. Shoveler (probably only seen here when
frozen out of somewhere else), Am. Pipit, Red Crossbill (3), Chesnut-brown
Canary, Ruby-throated Sparrow. Pt. Lookout, yesterday, also had freeze
displaced Buffleheads and Greater Scaup, to go along with about 25 Common
Eiders. 6 Oystercatchers were on the jetties (first time I can remember that
in mid-winter, wintering ones are usually in the channels). Most photogenic
bird was an Ipswich Sparrow feeding for an extended time on the sand near
the base of the westernmost jetty (picture, if interested, is on my web site
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ on the recent work page -- there a couple
of interesting, though not highest quality pictures on the way there).
