After just missing the Greater White-fronted geese at Blydenburgh County Park
in the morning, I tried in the afternoon for the bird that has been seen
repeatedly at St. Charles Cemetery since December. Well, I struck out on that
bird too, but managed to find the continuing BARNACLE GOOSE and CACKLING GOOSE.
The former was first seen with
a flock of ~100 Canada geese along the eastern edge of the cemetery, south of
the Wellwood Avenue entrance. On my way to the north entrance of the cemetery I
encountered
a much larger flock of Canadas (~500) in the northeast quadrant. Given the
number of birds I figured the odds were pretty good that the white-fronted
would be among them.
But over an hour spent repeatedly scoping the flock from edge to edge did not
bear fruit. I did spot the Cackler though, and the flock with the Barnacle
eventually flew in to swell the flock size. Smaller groups of various sizes
came and went while I was there, but the white-fronted never did arrive. Also
present was a probable Canada X domestic goose hybrid. My eBird report with
photos is here: http://ebird.org/ebird/ny/view/checklist?subID=S12765805
