Highlights of reports received February 14 through February 21 from the Niagara Frontier Region include TUFTED DUCK, SLATY-BACKED GULL, KING EIDER and GR. WHITE-FR. GOOSE. February 18, at the source of the Niagara River, a female TUFTED DUCK among abundant GREATER SCAUP and REDHEADS, at the far end of the Bird Island Pier. There are only a few previous records of TUFTED DUCK in the region. Rotary Park and LaSalle Park, both off Porter Avenue in Buffalo, provide safe, but limited viewing of the waterfowl flocks along the pier. Also in the same area, a SLATY-BACKED GULL was reported again February 17 at the offshore Donnelly's Pier, viewed from the Erie Basin Marina tower on Erie Street in Buffalo. Back on February 12 at the tower, a SNOWY OWL was refound on the outer harbor breakwall. Reported February 18, a rare, breeding plumage, male KING EIDER has been wintering on the Welland Canal at Port Weller, Ontario. On Lake Erie, waterfowl at Dunkirk Harbor have been highlighted by four GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE, still present on February 16, with SURF SCOTER, 4 BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERONS and 4 BALD EAGLES. BALD EAGLES also reported over Allegany State Park, along with RUFFED GROUSE and BELTED KINGFISHER in the park. Other BALD EAGLES - a pair on nest at Cayuga Pool in the Iroquois Refuge, and a single BALD EAGLE over Military Avenue in Tonawanda. At Buckhorn Island State Park on Grand Island, single WHITE- W. CROSSBILL and COMMON REDPOLL feeding by the concrete bridge on the hiking trail, and two GREAT HORNED OWLS calling in the distance. TUNDRA SWANS continue on the Grand Island waters off Buckhorn and Beaver Island State Parks. In the past week - two LITTLE GULLS passing Niagara-on-the- Lake, Ontario. PEREGRINE FALCON at the nestbox and atop the Winspear Avenue chimney on the UB Main Street Campus. MERLIN on Shirley Avenue near the UB campus, and another MERLIN on Fletcher Chapel Road in Shelby. 34 WILD TURKEYS continue south of the Waterport Road cemetery in the Town of Carlton. And, a NORTHERN SHRIKE on Klossen Road in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area. The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, February 28. Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday.
