Fellow Birders;
I spent parts of this morning and afternoon going back and for to Alley
Pond Park and Oakland Lake, both in Queens County. At Alley Pond I managed my
FOS Blue-winged Warbler and Brown Creeper, plus yet another Eastern Kingbird--
still early for the species, though not so much as one was a week ago. At
Oakland Lake, the Hooded Warbler was more vocal and visible than ever (viewed
easily from the Springfield Blvd staircase), although still quite impossible to
photograph. Interestingly, in the late morning it was singing, later in the
afternoon it was calling only. I managed modest recordings of both sounds, and

Crank up your volume, as I had mine low due to ambient noise (planes, cars, and
road work!). By the by, I recommend that one does NOT employ playback to
entice this bird-- it seems rather skittish and could easily be driven away by
too much love! I have not employed playback even once, it should not be
necessary in any case. Take a seat halfway down the staircase, look to your
right, and wait, with your ears open-- you should get it. Quite a remarkable
bird.
