Fellow Birders;
As noted previously by Shane Blodgett, the Say's Phoebe did not seem to
be present at yesterday's location in Prospect Park. Perhaps it is still in
the park, but the area with sumacs was overrun with unleashed dogs; now matter
how well they are behaved, the have to effect a low-foraging bird such as the
phoebe. I was in the area (moving about some) from about 7 a.m.- 11:a.m--
there were many talented birds around, no one reported the phoebe. It is
possible that the bird will return when the canine traffic diminishes during
the week.
On the good side, this was the best day of migration thus far, and I doubt
that anyone left the park disappointed. I enjoyed a dozen species of warbler,
including Ovenbird, Blackburnian, Prairie, Black-throated Blue, and Kentucky,
all of these FOS for me. Also Warbling, Blue-headed, Red-eyed, and White-Eyed
Vireos (the latter two FOS), and FOS Wood and Swainson's Thrush. The latter
struck me as a bit early, but in checking my records I see that I've seen it
once this early in NY-- I see species this by the thousands in passage in
Panama, have no doubt as to my i.d.. It was a glorious day, extralimital
species (absent) aside! Happy birding to all.
