Two adult-like Arctic Terns were seen this afternoon on the flats north of Cupsogue County Park, Suffolk County, Long Island. One bird remained for about 40 minutes before departing for the ocean. A second bird was detected about 20 minutes later and was distinguishable from the first by virtue of its more petite and less dusky-tipped bill. The configuration of the flats and channels around Moriches Inlet was evidently altered by Sandy and the winter storm cycle, so use care and good judgment in exploring this area.
