On the second day of the Putnam County month long breeding survey Charlie
Roberto and I spent the early morning 530-9 (well 615 for me) at Fahnestock
State Park primarily the red and blue trails off Rte 301 just west of Canopus
Lake. Highlights were warblers: singing cerulean on 301, 4 worm eating, 5 BT
blue, 2 prairie, an alder flycatcher, 2 great crested FC, RB grosbeak, 2 hairy
WP, pileated WP, and really exciting for us were two ruffed grouse -- quite
numerous were scarlet tanagers, veery, wood thrush, pewee, B+W warblers, and at
least 10 ovenbirds (still an understory in that Park) after I left, Charlie
headed north on rte 9 and did even better near gulf station/deli about a mile N
of intersection of rtes 9 and 301 he had MISSISSIPPI KITE -- also in that area
peregrine, 2 Red shouldered hawks and green heron
