Last night I had just accepted that sometimes you get 'em and sometimes you
don't. But during a later phone call with my mom she said, "You mean you're not
going to try again tomorrow so that Dad and I can watch little David?" So at
0745 today I dropped my son off at my folks. My parents wished me good luck,
and my mom informed me she had said a prayer to St. Anthony. So, I was only a
little bit demoralized when I learned upon my arrival to the flats at 0845 that
the bird had just been seen briefly but had not been relocated. The dense fog
made viewing very difficult. After exchanging numbers with Andy Guthrie I spent
the next 1 and 3/4 hours slowly checking and rechecking the exposed areas to
the south, west, and north of the the main tern roosting area. After
circumnavigating the island (which I had never done before) I arrived back at
the spot Menachem Goldstein reported finding the bird yesterday, an area I had
checked several times already. And there
it was..and what a beauty! Although this bird has reportedly been skittish it
initially made it's way toward me and was quite content to feed and preen in
the area  for the next 35 minutes at which time I left the bird where I found
it. Several birders were enjoying good views but from a distance which seemed
to work for us and the bird.  Thanks Mom!

Cheers,
