This morning while shearing trees I saw and found something I had not
seen before. A Black-billed Cuckoo flushed from a 6' high Norway spruce
tree and did a distraction display. It flew, making considerable noise
with its wings then it began fluttering losing altitude. When it was
almost to the ground, it flew up again noisily and then fluttered almost
to the ground. After that it flew into a thick bush out of sight. When I
checked the tree it came out of, I found a nest with 4 eggs.
I did a lot of atlas work. I have also been growing Christmas trees for
3 decades. Until now, I had never found a cuckoo nest (NE = nest w/
eggs), or seen one do a distraction display (DD).
Also on 7/14 while sitting on the patio in the evening a Barred Owl was
calling while a Wilson Snipe displayed constantly. Yesterday I saw a
Sharp-shinned Hawk fly over carrying prey. Pretty much every morning we
awaken to the sound of hungry young ravens.
