It was wet and windy on the eastern end of Long Island today. Foggy and
rainy in the morning, improving a little bit in the afternoon. At Montuak
Point (Suffolk Co.) a good number of shearwaters were passing close to
shore some pausing to feed alongside the hordes of terns. A 1-hr count
looking south produced 324 *Cory's Shearwater* (conservative), 59 *Great
Shearwater*, 3 *Sooty Shearwater* and 1 *Manx Shearwater*. The highlight of
the session was a pair of *Pomarine Jaegers* that came past the Point then
drifted through the Cory's before disappearing into the bank of mist
hovering a couple of miles offshore. Visibility on the north side was very
poor but there were 70 or more Cory's feeding with terns about 1/2 mile of
shore, coincident with the edge of more fog.

Common Terns seem to be everywhere with many roosting on the north side of
the peninsula and feeding on the south side. Flocks could be seen shuttling
overland pretty much everywhere I stopped. Viewing from a number of
vantages on Napeague Bay I tallied 46 *Black Terns* with a couple more at
Montauk Point. Visible shorebird migration included some Least Sandpipers
coming ashore at the Point and a tight flock of 40 *Lesser
Yellowlegs*flying SW over Theodore Roosevelt County Park.
