I'm sure many on this list remember making the obligatory fall trip out to
the "dug" potato fields of Daniels, Hedges and Parsonage Lanes for the
"pipers of the fields", as well as Whimbrel, or as it was known then,
Hudsonian Curlew...this of course, was before the proliferation of sod
fields. I first experienced the productivity of this part of Sagaponack on
a Gil Raynor led field trip. Normally, we would have started the day at
Montauk Point, working ourselves back to these fields, with stops in
between, at Montauk, Napeauge, Amagansett and E.Hampton. Sag Pond and Mecox
Bay usually followed the potato fields, and if there was enough time, we
would check out Shinnicock Inlet and Dune Rd., Hampton Bays. We did quite
well most of the time, by visiting these varied and proven habitats,
however, some of the time we had "insider information". While we all would
check the N.Y.C. R.B.A. on the day of the week it was updated ( I believe
on Thursday or Friday night ), Gil and Tom Davis (Mr. R.B.A. himself) had a
close relationship, one that had Tom (a N.Y.Telephone office employee)
always calling Gil, when something good was found ! Today, most of those
fields (with their "black" dirt, considered the richest in N.Y.S.) are now
occupied by many large houses, of many different architectural
styles...some of which, to me, being constructed in bad taste !

Cheers,
Bob

The field located along Daniel's Lane and Peter's Pond Lane continues to
have American Golden Plovers:
Yesterday, 9/11 there were 3 at 5:15pm and 33 at 7:00pm. None were present
so far today.
