I thought birders might like to hear that the Suffolk County Department of
Parks has recently installed a public parking area along the north side of
Anchorage Road in the Village of Belle Terre, just outside of Port Jefferson.
The parking area fits approximately 6 vehicles.

For years, this park has been inaccessible due to Village parking restrictions.
There is some very interesting habitat at this location with a scrubland
peninsula that juts out into the Long Island Sound, directly across the way
from Old Field Point. Aside from good land birding, this is a great location to
view Winter waterfowl with open views of the Long Island Sound along with a
sheltered cove. Good vagrants have been reported at Old Field Point in the past
and you can bet that this park would be a likely trap for future goodies.

For those unfamiliar with this location, here are the coordinates:

 40°58'14.47"N, - 73° 5'2.05"W

Its a bit of a hike to access the peninsula but it is well worth it. Kayaks are
also acceptable but you must carry down a small hill to reach to reach the
waters edge. If the parking lot is full, do not park along the road side as you
will get ticketed.

Best,
