While manning the Fire Island hawk watch (eastern end of RMSP) Sunday, 22
Peregrine Falcons, 30 Merlin, and 1 Osprey were counted through the mist and
fog. During raptor lulls, attention was paid to bird life out over the ocean.
There, a significant movement of Black Scoter was observed. Several flocks,
ranging in size from ~50 to ~350, were moving east to west. A rough tally of at
least 1000 birds was seen. A few smaller flocks were later seen heading back
east, one being led by 2 White-winged Scoters. Other notable seabirds included
1 Cory's Shearwater, several N. Gannets, 1-2 Royal Terns, and some lingering
Common Terns.
