Judging from the growing number of reports scattered across the northeast,
this might be another good winter for SNOWY OWL in our region. Indeed this
morning I found a heavy barred example (imm. female?) sheltering from the
very strong northerly wind on Hick's Island, Napeague (Suffolk Co.). This
is only spot I'm willing to publicly report Snowy Owls from because they
can be viewed undisturbed from Lazy Point, just across the narrow channel.
Today the bird was across from the boat launch, hunkered down almost at
beach level. There could well be other examples scattered around LI and the
metropolitan area but please use good judgment when reporting. If necessary
give a general location only so that we can get a sense of how many birds
are in the area but without causing too much disturbance to them or the
sensitive habitat they favor as wintering sites.
