We walked the Jones Beach State Park side of Jones Inlet this morning, despite
the snow and ice that made walking a real workout. Highlights included the
continuing Northern Shrike observed north of the Fishing Road, mostly staying
low and moving frequently. In Jones Inlet the Red-necked Grebe was observed
frequenting the inlet mouth. On the WE jetty a flock of thirty Purple
Sandpipers passed over the jetty, while approx. ten Purple’s were feeding on
the jetty with Dunlin and a single Ruddy Turnstone. Despite the extensive snow
cover, we only found Horned Lark’s feeding in the roadway.

I have added a few historical photos of New York birds to my flickr site. These
pictures consist of poor quality digitized film slides and a few digiscoped
photos taken from the 1970’s to the early 2000’s. Many of the photos were taken
with a Spiratone 400mm lens that retailed for $49! As the results of the photos
reveal, you get what you pay for. Species include Green-tailed Towhee, Great
Gray Owl, Harris’s Sparrow, and others.
