It might be a big deal in another winter, but I'll report it anyway. There were two Red-necked Grebes on the Mill River, by the East Rockaway (Nassau) train station this afternoon. Last week's Canvasbacks were gone, but two female Common Goldeneyes remain. Also out of place this far upriver are continuing Red-breasted Mergansers, but no Common Mergansers yet.
Unlike my last couple of RN Grebe encounters, these (one more than the other) were active and put on a show - diving and bringing up prey (looked like Grass Shrimp), snaking along the water's surface, wing flapping, and even calling. All this at often close range, in good light, on calm water - a dream setup. Maybe that's what it was. I also dreamt that it was sunny and warm, with just a gentle breeze.
