Learning to Bird For Beginners and Veterans Alike with Rick Wright, PhD - April 9th, 7pm
Even the best birders make mistakes identifying birds – but not every birder collects those mistakes. Join Rick Wright for this entertaining journey through 35 years of blunders and bobbles. From the Great Horned Mop to the Russet-crowned Motmot, Rick’s “sightings” over the years have led him to develop a set of birding rules that, for the most part, help him avoid repeating the same mistakes – and may help you keep from committing them yourself. A native of southeast Nebraska, Rick Wright studied French, German, Philosophy, and Life Sciences at the University of Nebraska before making a detour to Harvard Law School. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1990, he spent a dozen years as an academic, holding successive appointments as Assistant Professor of German at the University of Illinois, Reader in Art and Archaeology at Princeton University, and Associate Professor of Medieval Studies at Fordham University. Rick is the book review editor at Birding magazine and the former editor of Winging It. The Managing Director of WINGS from 2008 to 2010, he is now a Senior Leader with that company. Rick is a widely published writer, a sought-after lecturer at birding events, and a popular tour leader in Europe and North America. Among his many publications are two books on the Latin school literature of the Middle Ages. His ABA Field Guide to New Jersey Birds was published in spring 2013; his Peterson Reference Guide to the Sparrows is scheduled for 2015. Location: downstairs meeting room of the Cold Spring Harbor Library. Stella Miller President Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon "Conservation is sometimes perceived as stopping everything cold, as holding whooping cranes in higher esteem than people. It is up to science to spread the understanding that the choice is not between wild places or people, it is between a rich or an impoverished existence for Man."
