After the heavy rain all day yesterday and last night, I was a little surprised to step outside this morning in Bay Shore to a warm, still, foggy morning, with White-throated Sparrows singing.
I therefore decided to make a stop on my way to Staten Island at Canarsie Park in Brooklyn, right off the Belt Parkway. The volume of birds there wasn't huge, but it was very clear that new migrants had dropped in. Highlights included Prothonotary Warbler, Blue Grosbeak, 2 Yellow-throated Vireos, Nashville Warbler, and some other firsts of the season for me. Yesterday, during the storm, I checked some places in western and centrla Suffolk County for shorebirds (hoping for a Euro Golden-Plover!). The best I found was a big flock of about 150 Black-bellies with some Dunlin in a fied in Eastport, plus an adult (pristine) Lesser Black-backed Gull at Heckscher SP.
