Following up on Shaibal and Tom's reports, I as well as a number of other
birders worked Hempstead Lake State Park and West End II at Jones Beach.
Highlight of the day was a female type Summer Tanager at West End II in the
northwest corner of the parking lot. It was observed for a few minutes
before disappearing into the dense scrub. The bird was yellow bellied and
the bird's back was a mustardy orange color. Large tanager bill was also
noted. The bird was found due to a second hand report of a male Summer
Tanager in the same area. The bird was searched for a while after, but
could not be relocated.
Other highlights for the day included in no particular order, (taxonomic or
otherwise), at Hempstead Lake: Warbling and Blue-headed Vireo, Ovenbird,
Northern Waterthrush. Tree, Barn and N. Rough-winged Swallows. The lone
Bank Swallow from the other day apparently moved on.
At Lido Preserve Marbled Godwit, Willet, Forster's Tern, Semipalmated
Sandpiper and Plover.
West End II yielded Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Veery, Indigo Bunting, Scarlet
and Summer Tanager and a group of Orchard Orioles consisting of an adult
male, female and a few young males. All in all a great day to be out.
