The Napeague/Lazy Point area as posted by pmaxp proved to be a stellar repeat performance by the Chuck-Will's Widows and the Eastern Whip-poor-wills.
"In the calm, still, summer nights when under the light of the summer moon the dark plumes of the pines stand motionless against the sky, the loud sweet notes of the Whip-poor will ring through the forest shades and." (Forbush and May 1939 Natural History of the Birds of Eastern and Central North America). A perfect description. And of course the characteristic notes of the Chuck's first heard last night were like a loud bold whistle. A rendering "Twixt-hell and white-oak" is given by A. T. Wayne according to Forbush (1927). Not sure I "heard " that nemonic.
