11/7/14 Long Lake, NY (Hamilton Co.)

I ventured out into the snow this morning for a brief drive on Sabattis
Circle Road. It was quiet, and as I began to drive home, I found 2 Gray
Jays foraging in the road. I stopped and threw them some raisins, then
heard Evening Grosbeaks overhead! A male and female perched over me in
deciduous trees. I posted some not-so-great photos to my Facebook page at
https://www.facebook.com/AdirondackAvian . I was happy to see that Willie
D'Anna and Betsy Potter posted a female Evening Grosbeak at their feeders
this morning - hopefully, there is a movement underway. This Adirondack
nesting species disappeared two winters ago and has yet to return in the
same numbers. I used to typically have over a hundred visit our Long Lake
feeders in winter, and I would hear them on most outings in breeding season
- but I've only had a handful of brief winter flyover records over the past
couple years. Hopefully, Evening Grosbeaks will find our feeders this
winter.

11/5/14 Chain Lakes Road (S) Indian Lake (Hamilton Co.)

I hiked around 6 miles in the newly opened Chains Lakes Road (S) location
accessed from the Indian Lake area. While the area was logged for many
years, I did see a few beaver wetlands that may be attractive to Olive-sided
Flycatchers and of course there will be habitat for Mourning Warblers. I
found 4 Snow Buntings in the dirt road trail and many American Tree Sparrows
among the typical year-round species. I'll be publishing a blog on this
trip that will include many photos of the area and I'll post the link.

11/4/14 Raquette Falls Harrietstown (Franklin Co.)

I hiked between 11 and 12 miles on the trail to Raquette Falls, including
the loop trail of the canoe carry and trail at the river's edge. I flushed
5 Ruffed Grouse on the hike in! A Black-backed Woodpecker called in the
vicinity of the Lower Falls. I will also be publishing a blog on this
remote area that will include photos and a video of the falls - will post
the link.
