This one was on Rt 18 (Lake Road) in the Town of Wilson, just east of the Town of Porter, in Niagara County. It was somewhat barred with blackish, so not an adult male like so many have been. This is the fourth SNOWY OWL that I have come across in the region this fall and I did not chase any of them. The only ones I did chase were the two or three at the Batavia Airport but I didn't see them. Interestingly, by this time last year, I still had not seen a Snowy Owl. It will be interesting to see how this winter's numbers stack up to last year's amazing incursion.
Also today, I saw the female HARLEQUIN DUCK found by Celeste Morien in the rapids out from Goat Island (above Niagara Falls). This duck was next to the island with the scrubby tree, where one or more have been seen the last two or three winters. The juvenile TRUMPETER SWAN, found by David Mark on Saturday, was still present at the renovated lagoon at Beaver Island State Park. Park at the Marina parking lot for the quickest access. Also present on the swimming beach behind the casino was the juvenile ROSS'S GOOSE that has been here for a couple of weeks at least.
