Someone in the past (probably Gil Raynor) told me in this type of habitat to keep your binoculars on a hunting Marsh Hawk (it's name back then...aka N.Harrier) because you never know what it will "put up"...today it was my FOS Short-eared Owl ! Although a pair these have been reported recently in this area*, I only had the one individual, which spent most of it's time taking short flights ( presumably hunting) before lighting on a short Cedar, before doing it all again. As I was watching the bird, Dave & Steve (should have written down their surnames - sorry guys) arrived, stating they had seen the bird (from a different spot) that I was watching and that Steve had just got on the 2nd owl before losing it as they alighted from their car. We all tried to re-find this bird without success. The time was ~ 1645, the sky was overcast, and it was raining. This was my 3rd try for the Short-eared, and I'm hoping this # will have good karma for me, as the next time I go Bohemian Waxwing hunting, it will be # 3!
