Arriving a tad late (1010) at mostly frozen over Merritt's Pond in Riverhead, a sizable flock of Canada Geese were still in evidence, although I'm fairly sure that some of the roosting flock must have left earlier. There were 3 notable geese, 2 hybrids and the bird referred to on the subject line - my FOS Cackling Goose. The 1st "funny" goose was probably a canada x snow (size & plummage), while the 2nd's lineage might be somewhat trickier. It was similar to the 1st, but had the bright yellow legs of a white-fronted. Also visible were 2 drake pintails, 2 drake ringnecks, a single drake hooded, a few wigeon & blacks and of course, "m & m's" (many mallards) !
