Jan 16, 2014 Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) started at Belmont Lake SP. and quickly found the WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. A bit of help from visitors from Mass. found us the BARNACLE GOOSE.
We proceeded to Massapequa Preserve and struck out on the EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, but went back and found it before we left. Joined by others and walking north, we found the two warblers feeding in the cattail stalks. The birds quickly disappeared. We waited and wandered a bit and as we were getting ready to leave, the NASHVILLE and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS flew up into the top of a bare tree giving good looks before flying off. Joe and I stopped at CAMMANNS POND and found 12 BLACK-CROWNED and 1 GREAT BLUE HERON on our way to Pt. Lookout. The wind was blowing a gale, kicking up sand with wild surf. A quick look found no Eiders today. About 75 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were on the beach and feeding in the surf. Also there were many LONG-TAILED DUCKS in the water and flying about.Too windy, too cold. We left without proceeding down the beach.
