The 2 barnacle geese first sighted by Caitlin Carlstrom and reported by Derek Rogers, were with a flock of about 500 Canadas on the north side of 25 just east of Edwards Avenue in Calverton this morning (with 2 TVs cruising overhead) . A little further west on 25 there's a dirt road into what appears to be a quarry, and there I found a dozen green-winged teal (and 1 strange Canada goose with white marks on the crown and hind neck in addition to the typical cheek areas). Further west at EPCAL, I saw 1 light morph rough-legged hawk, 3 harriers and a sharpie. On the way back to the East End, I checked the Peconic River from Evergreen Rd (off 24) where there were several hundred scaup (mixed lesser and greater), 2 redhead ducks and about a dozen ring-necked ducks. Ended the trip with a merlin at the intersection of Montauk Hwy and Sagg Rd. All in all, definitely the least painful trip to the DMV I've had in years.
