This morning there was a good sparrow flight at RMSP, highlighted by eight species of sparrow. Song Sparrow (135 - there were many more) and Dark-eyed Junco (53) dominated the flight, with small numbers of Swamp, Tree, Chipping, Fox, and White -throated Sparrows. Eastern Phoebe put in a good showing, with twenty-three individuals observed. I had my first Northern Gannet since early winter on the ocean as well as a flyby Red-necked Grebe. Other migrants present at RMSP included Piping Plover (1), Killdeer (12), Golden-crowned Kinglet (3), and Rusty Blackbird (3).
Sue and I recently spent nine days in Florida birding, where we finally caught up with La Sagra’s Flycatcher at Lantana Nature Preserve. We recorded two countable exotics - Purple Swamphen and Egyptian Goose. Our biggest disappointment was missing Key West Quail Dove (by a few days) down in the Keys. As slight compensation we had nice looks at a Swainson’s Warbler at Long Key State Park. A few photos of the trip are on my flickr site.
