Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens County, NY
Tuesday, 30 August, 2016 -

on a tour of the East Pond from sunrise thru 1 pm,
high tide cycle, 2 Caspian Terns were at the north
island in the pond roosting among gulls & then at
about 7, taking off. For waders (known as shore
birds to North Americans) there was some variety,
the numbers as before made up of Semipalmated
Sandpipers above aII in 4-digit quantities, with the
others noticed including few Stilt Sandpipers, and
other typically-common-in-August wader species.

and, 'SaIt Marsh' Skipper on pink-fIowered plants
of that name, a Fleabane - 2 were seen niceIy...
yes that is a butterfly and it is very small & brown!

No migrant land-birds noted, & that's been almost
the story in Central Park, Manhattan (ok, there've
been a dozen or so warbler species & such, but it
pales in comparison to days with bigger migration
as seen a few times this August) this & yester-day.
However in fairness the 'gardens' at Jamaica Bay
were not investigated as they'd be best site for a
migrant land-birds touch-down. & yes, the Red-
breasted Nuthatch slow-mo-irruption continues -
as it has ever since June...

'What are you doing for others?' "
