After splendid views of the Ross's Gull at Tupper Lake, NY, and a
frolicking good time with the Gray Jays at Newcomb (thanks, Joan), our
group of four went down to Lake Champlain and had great views of the drake
Tufted Duck easily visible from the overlooks at Crown Point State Park
(that is after painstaking efforts to locate, then re-locate, the bird
amongst a throng of scaup and goldeneyes). From previous reports, the raft
of ducks has a habit of shifting between the New York side and the Vermont
side of the lake. Fortunately for us, they were on the New York side giving
us the benefit of viewing with the late afternoon sun behind us casting
most favorable lighting conditions for enjoying all those striking birds
out on the water. We also had a magnificent adult bald Eagle fly overhead,
a female N. Harrier feeding on something up close to us in a field nearby
and unfortunately, a freshly killed Barred Owl beside the road down from
the park proper.
