Today was the first time I've been to the beach since the reports started about the shearwater deaths. Walking west from the White Sands hotel in Napeague (East Hampton) I found 6 dead birds within a 1 mile stretch. This area seems to concentrate ocean debris so 6 dead birds in 1 mile should not be extrapolated to the 180 plus that would have been expected for East Hampton's 30 some miles of ocean beach, but still, it's depressing to think about how widespread this event may have been.
