On a high tide this afternoon, the Shorebird highlights from a few hours
birding the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge are as follows:
AMERICAN AVOCET (1)
American Oystercatcher (4)
Black-bellied Plover (5)
Semipalmated Plover (14)
Stilt Sandpiper (3)
Least Sandpiper (14)
White-rumped Sandpiper (2)
Pectoral Sandpiper (1)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (275)
WESTERN SANDPIPER (1) - Juvenile
Short-billed Dowitcher (57) all juveniles
Spotted Sandpiper (3) - juveniles
Greater Yellowlegs (15)
Lesser Yellowlegs (27) - 19 juveniles
Duckage highlights include: A couple of Green-winged Teals and 7 Northern
Shovelers.
Several Little Blue Herons including a few juveniles.
A note on the north end of the pond. There is not much shoreline available
there and most of the peeps continue to feed north of dead man's cove where
some flats have opened up. Walking in is much better than it was a few weeks
ago. However, it remains mucky and there are several soft spots that can get a
tad tricky to navigate. Unless you have few tours under your belt, I would
suggest birding the south end instead.
