Participants on this years Captree CBC (southwestern Suffolk County, LI) enjoyed beautiful weather, with temperatures of 30-35 F, very light winds and overcast skies—all contributing to ease of bird detection. Our total of 125 species was well above average and included one new addition to the count: a Mountain Bluebird found by Patricia Lindsay and party on Democrat Pt, near the western end of Fire Island. We narrowly missed adding Eared Grebe to the list of species recrded on count day, but this species will be added to the master spreadsheet owing to its presence during the count-week period.
A few of the many highlights were: 1 Cackling Goose (Belmont) 15 Redheads (Gardiner) 1 American Bittern (Jones) 3 Lesser Yellowlegs (Heckscher) 2 Razorbills (Fire) 2 Back-legged Kittiwakes (Fire) 2 Snowy Owls (Jones & Fire) 2 Northern Saw-whet Owls (Seatuck & Connetquot) 2 Brown Thrashers (Seatuck & East) 2 Orange-crowned Warblers (Seatuck & East) 1 Lapland Longspur (Fire) 1 Pine Warbler (Heckscher) 1 Saltmarsh Sparrow (Jones) 9 Rusty Blackbirds (Belmont & Connetquot) 1 Baltimore Oriole (Fire) 1 Pine Siskin (Fire) Our worst misses were two difficult species, Great Cormorant and Chipping Sparrow. A detailed report will be available after we get a chance to go over all the numbers.
