<http://goo.gl/8cnmjT> at 8:00 pm this Wednesday, February 21, 2018. Free
admission. Refreshments served.

QCBC members Donna Schulman and Ian Resnick will present “Jaguars, Jabirus and
Pão de Queijo: The Wonders of Brazil”
Donna Schulman and Ian Resnick travelled through Mato Grasso, the heart of
Brazil, for most of September 2017--birding the rain forest of Cristalino
Lodge, traveling the length of the Transpantaneira Highway across the Pantanal,
and exploring the grasslands and mountains of Chapada dos Guimaraes, all the
while sampling one of Brazil’s great foods-- pão de queijo, cheese bread.
Their small group, led by Carlos Sanchez of EcoAvian Tours and Bianca
Bernardon of Birding Pantanal, saw over 400 species of birds and 22 species of
mammals, plus assorted butterflies and reptiles. Donna and Ian will be
presenting photographs and video of their favorite birds and other living
things (over a hundred favorites, from Chaco Eagle to Choco Toucan, from
Bare-eyed Antbird to tiny Metalmark, from Giant Otter to a Jaguar family--it’s
very hard to whittle this down!), and talk about what it is like to travel to
and through these three major Brazilian biomes.
Donna learned how to bird with QCBC and has branched out from Queens to
Central and South America, Africa, India, and Europe. A librarian by trade, she
reviews birding books for 10,000 Birds and Birding magazine, and was featured
on the December American Birding Association podcast devoted to the Best
Birding Books of 2017. Donna’s photographs have been used by the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology, NJ Audubon, and other organizations, and her Black Oystercatcher
photo was featured in the Fieldcraft section of Birdwatching Magazine. She is
an adjunct professor at the School of Management and Labor Relations, Rutgers,
and a past editor of QCBC’s News and Notes.
Ian Resnick become hooked on birding 28 years ago, when he observed a
Rose-breasted Grosbeak singing from its nest at Ward Pound Ridge. Ian joined
the Queens County Bird Club in 1990, and has served as treasurer and president
for multiple terms. Ian leads many QCBC field trips; he is an excellent teacher
who enjoys helping the club's less experienced birders. He has birded much of
the US, parts of Canada, and has gone on multiple trips to Central and South
America. His travels to the southern hemisphere have included volunteer work
with Earthwatch involving sea turtles, parrots and other wildlife.
