In the early Spring of 2017, Andy and his wife spent a month enjoying the
mild climate in the city of San Miguel de Allende, in the State of Guanajuato,
Mexico. From there they took short trips around the region. Topography is
mountainous with sheltered valleys and high peaks to 12,000 ft elevation.
Vegetation is highly diverse, ranging from cactus desert through oak woodland,
pine and oak forests and sub-alpine fir forests. This variation in plant
communities ensures a great diversity of flora and fauna. Added to the
year-around diversity is the presence of winter migrant birds in the artificial
ponds and lakes. Andy will also comment on the people of the region and their
historically Spanish culture.
Andy Greller taught biology at Queens College for 30 years. He is
Vice-President of the LI Botanical Society and twice Past-President of the
Torrey Botanical Society. He is active in the North Shore Audubon Society and a
member of QCBC. He travels widely and has published articles on local, national
and international plant ecology.
