New York County (in N.Y. City) including Manhattan and Randall’s Island Sunday, Jan. 16th -
2 Western Tanagers continued on in their respective locations in Manhattan, the more-regularly-visited at Carl Schurz Park on the eastern side of the island (just east of East End Ave., and most regular there at or near feeders which are *south of* the main entrance at W. 86th St. - up a flight of stairs south of that; or, to the west of the n.w. gate of the Catbird Playground within that park) - and the other W. Tanager staying 'in the zone' at W. 47th-48th Streets, east of Tenth Ave. or on that avenue, in Hell’s Kitchen Park & vicinity, & at times, in or near Clinton Community Garden on W. 48th St. east of Tenth, where views can be had from outside the ‘key-holders-only’ garden. Please use good common sense & courtesy to all local residents in both areas. On Randall’s Island, among some highlights were ongoing an Glaucous Gull and 2 Iceland Gulls (which have been intermittently showing there, occasionally together), Snow Geese (mostly 2 together, but also at least 1 or poss. 2 others moving about), an ongoing adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Killdeer, American Pipit, and a ‘re-surfaced’ Orange-crowned Warbler - one of at least 2 seen (again) in the county. At Central Park in Manhattan, a Snow Goose remained on the reservoir, where a Lesser Scaup also visited (probably the individual long staying on “The Pool” in that park); an Orange-crowned Warbler was again along and near the reservoir’s north edge in the frigid, but sunny morning hours. Wood Ducks also continued in Central Park. A drake N. Pintail made a showing (& was photo’d. again) at the West 79th St. boat-basin off Riverside Park on Sunday morning; that bird can appear & also disappear for periods, but is a long-time visitor at least to that Hudson River location, usually seen with a motley group of Mallards around. good birding to all, Tom Fiore manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
