No sign of yesterday’s Crested Caracara at Camp Hero or any of the surrounding
environs of Montauk Point. Multiple birders covered the area extensively this
morning (including myself, Pat Lindsay, Shai Mitra, Jay Rand, and Jim Ash),
paying close attention to both the last known location and the most appealing
nearby habitat at Deep Hollow Ranch and Third House/Theodore Roosevelt County
Park. One detail worth noting was a conspicuous deer carcass in the pastures
south of Old Montauk Highway across from Deep Hollow. There were several crows
already in attendance at the feast, and I spotted a raven heading east up the
road toward that location while I was heading home. It seems like just the kind
of scene which would likely attract the caracara’s attention of it were still
lingering in the area, so I’d recommend that any interested locals and Suffolk
birders keep an eye on the site despite it seeming increasingly likely that the
bird has moved on.

Cheers,
